As the DNC gets under way this week there will be much talk about the Democrats’ agenda and their view for the future of this country, but what do we want hear about?
Jobs – Correction, Good Jobs. Yes this economy has made an amazing turn around since job loses began in 2007, but there is still much work to be done. We need jobs that offer benefits and security. This country will never make a full recovery if we create only low-wage jobs: no one can start a family, buy a house or contribute to the economy if they are making the minimum! The American Dream will be lost without good paying jobs.
Health Care. Some of us actually like the Affordable Care Act – and you should too! In tough times, like now, health care might be the thing people forgo if they can’t afford it. But in the end when people wait last minute for insignificant ailments that later turn life-threatening trips to the ER, it is the taxpayer who is stuck paying for the bill. Let’s not forget the significance of Medicare and Medicaid which needs protection for future generations, instead of any proposals to privatize of the right to affordable health care.
Education. As we continue to cut teachers’ salaries, vital programs and scholarships, it’s no wonder our education standing is falling among other countries. We need to invest in our children because, it’s true – they are the future! Instead of burdening our young with the cuts in order to balance the budget we should instead ensure that everyone else is paying their fair share so that all have an equal opportunity at accessing a good education.
Taxes. As mentioned above, everyone needs to pay their share in taxes. It’s not fair for the budget to be balanced on the backs of the poor, the elderly, children or working families. No more outrageous tax breaks or confusing loop holes that only the wealthy and corporations are afforded. If regular Americans pay their fair share in taxes, it’s time for the wealthy and corporations to do their part for the well-being of this country.
Obviously we hope to hear in much more detail, not only from these key subjects, but about others too. What do you want to hear from the DNC?
